Cleopatra is one of the most mysterious, seductive, and powerful women in history. While the cause of her death is uncertain (it is believed she was bitten by an asp) she has certainly achieved everlasting life.

For native Taiwanese who were born in the 1980s, the image of the year 1949 is composed of blurred and fragmented pieces, as hazy and gloomy stories of the past that we only know from the high-school history textbook.
This February, my grandmother who lived through that period, passed away. Coincidently, I had been reading the book “Da Jiang Da Hai 1949” (or “Big River, Big Sea - Untold Stories of 1949”, written by Lung Ying-Tai). Suddenly I realize that it was too late for her to pass on her memories of that era to me.
How did the masses confront so much destitution, separation, and life-and-death struggle? Through recent books and documentary films that I have familiarized myself with this lost past. In the face of the great humanity and courage of my grandmother’s generation, I feel more humble about my own insignificant being. Through this dance, I sincerely hope to honor my dear grandmother as well as the uncommon lives lived by millions of common people in that era.
